What to Do Tonight: Scott Morgan and the Irrationals

Posted By on Sat, Nov 7, 2009 at 9:18 AM

When blue-eyed soul singer Scott Morgan and his band the Rationals emerged from the Ann Arbor scene in the late ’60s, their manager, Jeep Holland, was determined to get them on the radio, even though Detroit stations ignored his requests. Holland decided to make them a regional success instead. As a result, the band visited Cleveland regularly. “We would do The Upbeat Show and stay at the Versailles Hotel on Euclid,” recalls Morgan. “Jeep’s strategy was to get us on the radio in Cleveland, Flint and Chicago, and then get on Detroit radio.” With the recent reissue of the band’s first album, Think Rational!, as a two-disc import, Morgan has brought together “some of the best musicians from the Ann Arbor area” to tour as the Irrationals. They’re playing old faves like a cover of Otis Redding’s “Respect” and Carole King’s “I Need You.” “It’s going really well,” says Morgan. “People like it, and the band sounds good. Everyone enjoys doing it. We just have to work around everyone’s schedule. They’re all top-notch musicians. I’m just trying to ease back into this.” The Alarm Clocks and the Exploding Lies open at 9 p.m. at the Beachland Tavern (15711 Waterloo Rd., 216.383.1124, beachlandballroom.com). Tickets: $10. — Niesel
