What to do tonight: Kent State Folk Fest

Posted By on Fri, Nov 13, 2009 at 12:10 PM

If you’re looking for a giant dose of top-notch local music, tonight’s the night to head down to Kent. As part of the 43rd annual Kent State Folk Festival, dozens of Kent venues have banded together to offer more than 50 local music acts for free. It’s not strictly folk music either — there are plenty of full-on rock bands like the Twistoffs (who perform after a free set by Country Joe McDonald at the Water Street Tavern), swamp-poppers Cats on Holiday, alt-country ensemble Hillbilly Idol and the wildly eclectic Rio Neon. The highlights are too numerous to list in full, but among them are singer-songwriters Patrick Sweany, Zach and Tracey Thomas, the duo of Ryan Humbert and Emily Bates performing Everly Brothers tunes, reggae from Carlos Jones and the PLUS Band, the Mo’ Mojo zydeco band and blues singers Rockin’ Robin and Cleveland Fats. Some venues start as early as 3 p.m.; others go as late as 1 a.m. — Anastasia Pantsios
