What to Do Tonight: Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

Posted By on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 8:22 AM

When Scotty Morris thought about naming his new swing band back in 1989, he looked as far as the poster that blues guitar icon Albert Collins had signed for him: “To Scotty, the big bad voodoo daddy.” Big Bad Voodoo Daddy made their reputation playing in and around their California home base for five years before self-releasing an eponymous debut album, followed three years later by the Watchu’ Want for Christmas? EP. By then, the 1996 cult hit Swingers had featured their songs “Go Daddy-O” and “You & Me & the Bottle Makes 3 Tonight (Baby),” and the swing revival was in full, um, swing. Americana Deluxe, from 1998, was a hit. Although Big Bad Voodoo Daddy have shifted personnel since then (only Morris and drummer Kurt Sodergren remain from the original lineup), they’ve maintained their signature style. Their latest album, How Big Can You Get?, is a tribute to jazz great Cab Calloway, and their Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s Wild and Swingin’ Holiday Party tour picks up where 2004’s Everything You Want for Christmas CD left off. The show starts at 8 p.m. at House of Blues (308 Euclid Ave., 216.523.2583, Tickets: $22-$35. — Brian Baker
