What to Do Tonight: Cahn and Yang

Posted By on Wed, Jan 20, 2010 at 8:13 AM

Before they even signed a record deal, Los Angeles-based duo Cahn & Yang made more headway than most bands do with label backing. They sold some music to the Discovery Planet TV show Battleground Earth, their cover of the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me” become part of a Democratic National Committee video and they placed a song in The Education of Charlie Banks trailer. They’ve self-released only one record — Loyalty, a five-song EP. Led by Greg Cahn, a Cleveland native who now lives in the Los Angeles area, the duo (guitarist Alex Yang is the other half) makes simple, stripped-down music that emphasizes Cahn’s laidback vocals. Whether singing about failed relationships (“Meant to Be”) or espousing the virtues of Southern California’s unrivaled good weather (“Summertime”), Cahn sounds like Jack Johnson while retaining his own voice. Cahn & Yang play the Grog Shop (2785 Euclid Heights Blvd., Cleveland Hts., 216.321.5588, grogshop.gs) at 7 p.m. Belmez open. Tickets: $7. — Niesel

We’re keeping you informed…
...and it’s what we love to do. From local politics and culture to national news that hits close to home, Scene Magazine has been keeping Cleveland informed for years.

It’s never been more important to support local news sources, especially as we all deal with the ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic. Almost everything Scene is about -- our stories, our events, our advertisers -- comes down to getting together. With events on hold, and no print distribution for the foreseeable future, every little bit helps.

A free press means accountability and a well-informed public, and we want to keep our unique and independent reporting available for many, many years to come.

If quality journalism is important to you, please consider a donation to Scene. Every reader contribution is valuable and so appreciated, and goes directly to support our coverage of critical issues and neighborhood culture. Thank you.
