What to Do Tonight: Richie Havens

Posted By on Sun, Jan 24, 2010 at 8:39 AM

The 40th anniversary celebration of Woodstock last year brought a new audience to the music that was made during those three days in New York. Richie Havens — whose opening performance at the festival made him a star — is one of the survivors of the era. He just turned 69 and continues to regularly perform, record and keep up with activist causes. Havens still relishes his role at Woodstock, going so far as to record a new version of his timeless “Freedom” for the Taking Woodstock soundtrack last year. He also recently collaborated on the upcoming Preservation album with New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz band, which includes performances by Tom Waits, Merle Haggard and others. Havens performs at 8 p.m. at the Kent Stage (175 E. Main St., Kent, 330.677.5005, kentstage.org). Tickets: $28. — Barteldes
