Gordon Lightfoot, the Canadian singer-songwriter who scored a bunch of soft-rock hits in the '70s (including one that mentions Cleveland), died last night. He was 71.

There aren't too many details on his death, but you can read about Lightfoot and his legacy here.

Lightfoot had one No. 1 single in the U.S., 1974's "Sundown." But he's best known around here for 1976's "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," which reached No. 2.

The true story was based on the sinking of a merchant ship, which went down in Lake Superior in 1975 on its way to Cleveland. —Michael Gallucci (follow me on Twitter @mgallucci)
