What to Do Tonight: Dawes

There’s no mistaking the influence in Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith’s voice: That’s the Band’s Richard Manuel aching through the 11 songs on the Los Angeles band’s debut album, North Hills. There are several other classic reference points here too; pick any other artist working within the folk/rock/country idiom during the late ’60s and early ’70s and they’ve probably inspired Dawes. But it’s the Band’s legacy that looms the largest over the quartet, whether it’s the slow-burning crawl of “That Western Skyline” or the smoky shuffle of “When You Call My Name.” North Hills was recorded live in the studio, giving it the old-school lived-in vibe of proto-alt-country albums like Music From Big Pink and Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Willy and the Poor Boys. They’re also a pretty good representation of what you can expect onstage from Dawes. Plus, they should tide you over until the next Fleet Foxes record. Dawes play the Beachland Tavern (15711 Waterloo Rd., 216.383.1124, beachlandballroom.com) at 8:30 p.m. Thursday with Cory Chisel & the Wandering Sons and Jason Boesel. Tickets: $10. —Michael Gallucci (follow me on Twitter @mgallucci)
