What to Do Tonight: Free Energy

Posted By on Mon, Mar 8, 2010 at 9:03 AM

Before embarking on their new tour, Free Energy frontman Paul Sprangers had a lot of spunky ideas for the set. He wanted the celebratory vibe of his band’s music to coincide with equally colorful stunts — like throwing confetti at midnight, exploding T-shirt canisters and levitating drummer Nick Shuminsky mid-performance. Even if these concepts won’t pan out onstage, Free Energy will still bring a hell of a party to town. Echoing cowbell and chunky ’70s-style guitar riffs radiate from their song “Free Energy,” which is on their new album, Stuck on Nothing. Expect to hear plenty of crunchy melodies and vintage rock from these power-pop fans. Hoping to modernize that age-old sound a bit, LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy produced the new album, adding a dance-worthy sheen to the mix. But the band’s live show will showcase the Raspberries-like classic rock. They play the Beachland Tavern (15711 Waterloo Rd., 216.383.1124, at 8:30 p.m., with Foreign Born, Clovers and DJ Matt Rolin opening. Tickets: $10. —Danielle Sills
