What to Do Tonight: The Black Lips

Sweet stache!

Atlanta noisemakers the Black Lips love to fuck things up: your mind, their instruments, the way they bridge about a half-dozen genres without really nailing one. On last year’s 200 Million Thousand — their best record and the only one that comes close to playing by traditional music-making rules — the Lips take a cue from another Lippy band: the Flaming Lips, whose pre-prog mix of churning psychedelia and garage-punk throttle serves as inspiration. The songs on 200 Million Thousand sound like they were recorded two rooms away … on an iPhone in a closet. But the low-fi setting suits tracks like “Take My Heart,” “Drugs” and “Bad Kids” (which was on the [500] Days of Summer soundtrack). Onstage, the Black Lips tear through their songs with total disregard for everything within flailing distance. Beer cans, mic stands and band members often end up somewhere in the audience, bruised, battered and ready for another bout. The Black Lips play the Beachland Ballroom at 9 p.m. Box Elders and Cobra Verde open. Tickets: $12. —Michael Gallucci (follow me on Twitter @mgallucci)
