If all the talk of the bygone era of freaks and hippies that accompanied the 40th anniversary of the Kent State shootings this past week has you longing for that period’s idealism and whiff of potential change, you might enjoy local folk ensemble Long Road, who'll perform at Nighttown at 8 tonight.

The six-piece ensemble — led by guitarist/vocalist David Budin, whose own career in music stretches back 40 years — play ’60s folk and folk/rock classics, along with newer material with a similar vibe.

Budin put the band together for a one-off concert at Cain Park in 2007, but they had so much fun, they’ve continued to perform and expand their repertoire, which includes a Beatles tune, a ’50s TV theme, and a couple of originals from when Budin performed as Baxter Shadowfield in the ’70s.

The band features an all-star lineup of area music-scene veterans: guitarist/mandolinist Kevin Richards, guitarist Charlie Lewis, guitarist/pedal steel player Bob Sandham, bassist Ray DeForest, and banjo/autoharp player Celia Hollander Lewis.

Since all but DeForest sing, vocal harmonies are a group strong point.

Tickets are $10 for tonight's show. —Anastasia Pantsios
