Some of the commercial heavyweights of mainstream hip-hop hit the stage for Z107.9’s Summer Jam. Leading the charge is big-bearded, big-bellied Rick Ross, someone who has come a long way since being exposed as a former correctional officer in 2009, a revelation that seriously damaged the self-proclaimed “Teflon Don’s” street cred. Even with the success of his debut album, Port of Miami, and the subsequent Trilla, Ross seemed to have lost the respect of the hip-hop community. But the Dade County native kept on trucking, continuing his catchy bravado rap of the street life, fly women and fast cars. His anthem, “Maybach Music 2,” off of Ross’ third album, Deeper Than Rap, has become one of hip-hops most well known tunes, recognizable from the opening piano strokes from production duo J.U.S.T.I.C.E League. Joining him as a headliner is Plies, who prides himself on being the “realest” guy in rap. Each of Plies first two albums, The Real Testament and The Definition of Real (see how real he is?), reached gold status. A native of Fort Myers, Florida, Plies has flipped his southern drawl and ability to “communicate” with the opposite sex into immense commercial success for himself. Opening for Ross and Plies will be a variety of R &B and hip-hop artists, including up and comers Wacka Flocka Flame and Cleveland’s own Machine Gun Kelly, who won the fan vote to be tacked on to this year’s lineup. Others performing will be Trina, Dondria, Teairra Mari, Roscoe Dash, Britni Elise and Rydaz-N-Artists. The show begins at 4 p.m. at the Time Warner Cable Amphitheater. Tickets are $25-$50.
