Going Back

It’s been eight years since Phil Collins released a solo album. Not that he hasn’t been busy scoring Disney movies and touring with a reunited Genesis during the gap — maybe too busy to write any new songs, since Going Back is filled with mostly classic Motown songs from the ’60s and ’70s. This isn’t the first time Collins has flirted with Motown; a remake of “You Can’t Hurry Love” reached the Top 10 in 1982. On Going Back he covers such hits as “Jimmy Mack,” “(Love Is Like a) Heatwave,” and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.” And he sounds positively soulful on Stevie Wonder’s “Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer.” Collins produced the CD with a full, rich sound that recalls many of the classic R&B records of the era. Cover albums by aging rock legends are common these days, but Collins pulls off Going Back with class and style. —Eddie Fleisher
