10 Things Going on in Cleveland this Weekend (January 3-5)

To celebrate the completion of the museum’s expansion and renovation project, the Cleveland Museum of Art hosts the first of 2014’s MIX series tonight with DJ Rekha and her special blend of hip-hop, electronic and Bollywood beats. DJ Donga will also be on hand to play global tunes. While this particular MIX event is part of the larger expansion celebration, the MIX series is a monthly event with cocktails, art and music; the museum adopts a different entertainment theme each time. Cleveland's comedy scene is growing. Apart from creating comedic greats like Drew Carey and Dave Hill, the underground scene is quickly producing solid comedians with unique life perspectives. The Chucklefck comedy shows are at the forefront of this movement. At 8 tonight at Reddstone, come check out some of Cleveland's funnier assets in this five-comedian-deep line up. Clevelanders like Mike Polk Jr. (creator of the "Hastily Made Cleveland Tourism Video") and Ryan Dalton (featured on Comedy Central's Live at Gotham) are featured in tonight's show. For only $5, the rate of laughs to money spent can't be beat. Tomorrow night, eight other comedians like local favorites Yusuf Ali and Brian Kenny will perform. While a lot of these comedians are still early in their careers, they're still more than capable of creating a night full of laughs. Working class bar by day, indie rock club by night, Pat's in the Flat's is one of Cleveland's best-kept secrets. The club's been going strong since the mid-'80s and in the early 2000s, any number of great underground garage and punk bands played the place. Owner Pat Hanych has run Pat's since her father's death in 1969. She gets a proper tribute tonight at Space: ROCK as the gallery pays tribute to her with Pat's in the Flats' Roadhouse Chic: Rock and Rolling Rock at the Bottom of the Hill, an exhibit of concert photos featuring acts such as the Black Keys and the White Stripes, both of which performed at the tiny club before they started headlining arenas. As electronic music continues to get more and more popular, Cleveland is actively placing itself in the center of the movement that's rapidly taking over pop music. One of the longest-running supporters of the electronic scene is (216)BASS, a podcast that's promoted Cleveland-area Electronic Dance Music (or EDM) since 2009. Every month, (216)BASS puts on a live show called BASSICK, and this month it's at Duck Island. The event showcases some of Cleveland's best DJs. Tonight, the line-up includes DJ Meghan, Gilly, Panda ExFresh and Zeno. With music ranging from the danceable (techno and house) to the chaotic (drum 'n bass), tonight's show will expand your electronic palate. It all starts at 10 p.m.; cover is $3. A noted voiceover artist who can be heard in more than 50 TV shows and movies (including the SpongeBob SquarePants movie, for which he provided the voice of many characters), Joshua Seth is also a noted illusionist. His one-man show Beyond Belief: An Intimate Evening of Psychological Illusion arrives tonight for a month-long run. According to the press release hyping his appearance, the show “combines thought reading, magic and some good old fashioned showmanship to create an atmosphere of mystery and laughter that will absolutely astonish you.” We’ll see about that. Tina Fey is a much better writer than she is a performer. And before her 30 Rock empire, there was Mean Girls, the high school clique-flick which has enjoyed rabid cult success in the decade since its release. Here, you’ll see Lindsay Lohan as a fresh-faced teenager (this is before the substance abuse which has shipwrecked her image). Here, you’ll see Rachel McAdams as the character actress she was and still can be. Here, you’ll see Tim Meadows in one of the greatest comedic performances of the millenium. One of the biggest antique and collectible toy shows in Northeast Ohio kicks off today at 9 a.m. at the Lakeland Community College's Athletic Fitness Center. Hundreds of vendors will be on hand throughout the day, seeking to buy, sell and trade both vintage and new items. Folks who are interested in everything from model trains and comic books to pressed steel toys and just about everything in between are sure to find a gem or two in today's mix. Wicked, the Broadway musical based on The Wizard of Oz, has been through town a few times in the past. Yet every time it comes back round, it puts up huge numbers. While it might seem better suited to Halloween, the play, which tells the story of how the Wicked Witch of the West came to develop her deep-seated hatred for Glenda the Good, appeals to the entire family. So with some free time for the holidays, why not take the entire brood to the State Theatre to check out the show? Today's show at 1 p.m. is your last chance to see the play. Tickets are $30 to $175. Who knew Waiters would be so essential to this team’s success? I love him. I love his game. I love his energy off the bench. I love his hustle on defense and his heroic (though occasionally reckless) shot selection. Since returning from his minor wrist ailment, he’s been the scoring force we all hoped for when Chris Grant selected him fourth overall in last year’s NBA draft. The Cavs will need his punch tonight against the NBA’s Kings of the Mountain, the Indiana Pacers. Paul George and Kyrie Irving are the leading scorers in the Central Division and they’ll face off at 6 tonight at the Q. But the bench production will likely be a key factor in this matchup. “I hate this goddamn job, I hate these people…I’m gonna need something to get me through this day,” jokes comic Mike Lukas. That opening bit might make it sound like he’s identifying with anyone working a minimum wage job, but he’s actually referring to Disney Land employees. If the language weren’t bad enough, he caps the joke off with a coke-snorting pantomime, meaning that this may not be the best comedian to take the kids to if you can’t find a babysitter. By the joke’s end, he’s pretending to be a Space Mountain ride worker high on “Tinker Bell’s fairy dust” and eating the innards of a decapitated rider.
