Though it’s been nearly two decades since Wu-Tang Clan’s heyday, the iconic hip-hop group will always be revered for its impact on the scene (and will also never be “nothin’ to fuck with”). Not only are the members of Wu-Tang planning on releasing new stuff as an ensemble in the near future, they’ve all been busy with commendable solo work -- one of the most consistently impressive of the group may be Ghostface Killah. Praised by critics for his lyrical finesse, Ghostface has released ten critically acclaimed solo albums, proving that the old-school style of hip-hop is certainly not dead. His latest album, 12 Reasons to Die, is a concept album about the revenge of his musical alter ego, Tony Starks (not to be confused with the identity of Iron Man, Tony Stark) on a mafia family that betrayed him. The album has a “classic horror movie” feel to it. The old-school-oriented instrumentals containing old-era R&B and soul influences give the album a flavorful grit that compliments the concept and the ambiance of the album. It’s also a refreshing thing to hear in contrast to the abundance of overproduced instrumentals in hip-hop today. (Sam Mendez)
