17th Annual High School Rock Off Round 1

When: Fri., Jan. 11, 6 p.m. 2013
Price: $10
Now in its 17th year, the High School Rock Off gives local kids the chance to compete on the big stage and friends and family a chance to see them somewhere else than the basement. Held at House of Blues, the month-long event can help launch the career of burgeoning band or simply give some tykes a chance to play the big stage under the big lights. This year, a total of just over 60 acts (including three from Pennsylvania) are slated to compete, and that list includes six acts that made it to last year’s finals. Those returning bands are looking forward to having another shot at the grand prize, which includes an opening act slot for a Live Nation Concert. “I learned that a band needs more than just pure technicality or a flashy image or style,” says guitarist Mikey Diederich, who made the finals last year with a band called Audacity and this year brings his group Where Forever Dies to the competition. “A band needs to have chemistry together, a passion for the music they play, a connection between it’s members that truly shows on stage, and interaction with the crowd to let them know they’re a part of it all. Show comfort and presence on stage and the crowd will return the favor.” See if that does the trick when round one of six scheduled in January begins tonight. (Jeff Niesel)
