Kind of very national geographic for Scene!

Mother Nature is resilient - if provided a fighting chance - but she needs OUR help every day.

Re: “Three Northeast Ohio Mothers Recount the Pain of Giving Their Children Up for Adoption, and the Journey Toward Reunion Many Years Later

Daughter. Son. These are daughters and sons of the people who brought them into this world--and if biology doesn't matter, all I have to say is that biology is the only reason anyone can ever adopt a child, so maybe you better start caring about it more. And "birth mother's day"? NO. THESE ARE MOTHERS. Sorry that threatens you somehow. No I'm not. Not sorry at all.

Re: “Cleveland's Infant Mortality Rate, Especially Among African-Americans, Ranks As Poorly as Third World Nations. Christin Farmer and Her Team are Working to Change That

America has a higher infant mortality rate than Canada. We're falling behind in most all aspects. Maybe it's because we have the highest health care costs in the world. Doctors are just creating customers not cures.

Re: “The Cozy Relationship Between Editor Chris Quinn and Mayor Frank Jackson, And What It Means For Coverage of City Hall

I can't recognize the PD as the newspaper I read when I first moved here, almost 20 years ago. There is a crying need for real investigative journalism, and while the Scene does some exemplary pieces, it cannot offer the blanket coverage a daily paper is meant to.

There are other papers in the area -- Call & Post, for one. Or maybe a start up is needed.

I would pay to help support a collection of investigative reporters for NE Ohio, because corruption is killing this area. There are likely thousands more just like me.

But on second thought, Karen Farkas is just a soldier doing the bidding of her superiors. So I suppose I shouldn't hold it totally against her for just blindly following her marching orders.

Ray, what does being Democrat have to do with the endless cheerleading and embarrassingly biased coverage? Dan Gilbert is a 100% registered Republican, but they've been kissing his rear end and making him wealthier for the last 12 years.

Oh, and Karen Farkas is a joke. The stenographer title applies.

Re: “The Cozy Relationship Between Editor Chris Quinn and Mayor Frank Jackson, And What It Means For Coverage of City Hall

Nothing against the Scene, but this is what happens when your have a one horse newspaper town. The nick name Pee Dee is appropriate. Their are never any hard hitting researched stories regarding the city government. There is never any follow up when it comes to Frank. Examples, what ever happened to the $8.5M in lost rebates from computer purchases at CMSD? What happened to the lead cases within the department of Public Health? Why are the majority of arbitration cases lost by city the pertaining to police officers? Why does the mayor have more special assistants than there are city council reps? What do the so called "chiefs" actually do? Why did Marty Flask and the former chief of police get promoted instead of being fired for the East Cleveland shootout? Where is the Pee Dee in the coverage of CMSD and the waste of tax levy where Frank and gang promised an improvement in graduation rates and test scores? Why didn't the Pee Dee address/cover the $2.5M being spent on a dirt track and city services at best suck? This is why Cleveland is and will continue to fail. There's an absence of truthful information in the so called freedom of the press.

Shame on Quinn. He has the nerve to call himself a journalist. He's a lackey for a fool.

Re: “The Cozy Relationship Between Editor Chris Quinn and Mayor Frank Jackson, And What It Means For Coverage of City Hall

This is a democrat town with a democrat newspaper and city council. That's why nothing is balanced but all geared to the left which is why I cancelled my susbscription after many years. Tired of the nti police position , no hard line on the rule of law and too much sensitivity to criminals. Jackson is a disgrace with the City looking more and more like Chicago with murder and crime. He has not helped the minority community lift itself up . The police force is the lowest in decades with no attempt by the Mayor to beef the force up to deal with all the crime and gangs. Cities deteriorate under democrat governments.

I listen to him on the sound of ideas and you can tell he is a stooge for the mayor. I doubt he believes hald the stuff he says. It is really a shame.

Susan Goldberg pulled the operation out of being essentially a co-conspirator with the Dimora criminal enterprise.....but once she left (and her current stewardship of National Geographic is impeccable), the rats - again - began racing around the executive suite.

Re: “Cleveland Heights Freaks Out, Cancels Arts Fest Because of Social Media "Chatter"

We must give the police a little bit of room to operate. They are kept under very tight control to start with so a little room has to be provided. I don't see any evidence of an overreaction here. Pepper balls sent a message. Nobody was injured nor would it be prudent to assume anyone would. Their eyes burn for a bit. Gets their attention when need be. The proof is they just quiet down and everything reverts to where it should be. I support the police decision in this matter.

Re: “By His Hands

I focused in especially on Joe Dwyer's comment, re: "coldness." I don't envy Bishop Lennon's job at all--coming to a rust bucket city that's seen it's better days in what was its'core industries (manufacturing). Take a drive down Broadway Ave. around Holy Name Church. Check out the boarded up buildings Cleveland's population has shrunk by 17% since 2000 and a lot of people have suffered from it. And the religious Catholics probably suffer the most. I was baptized at an Inner City Church (closed) and made my first communion and confirmation at a suburban Catholic Church that has changed it's name.

This is tough stuff--but probably not much different than a City like Detroit, where the decline in their core businesses, caused their Inner City Churches to suffer and close. I don't know what the answer is, except the hard and discompassionate posture here is something to be concerned with.

Re: “The Frankenstein Factor

Very interesting and ambitious work.At this point, the idea of an immaterial soul being a sticking point is philosophically naive( Cartesian dualism in 2016?);these types of poorly understood metaphysical arguments are the same reasons stem cell research was temporarily, partially banned in the United States.
Animal research is unsavory,to say the least, but a necessary evil. The understanding of physical reactions to biological material is priceless.Vaccines save more lives (humans and animals) then they have taken to create unequivocally. Cars contribute to thousands (millions including animals) of deaths every year, nobody wants to ban cars. The first heart transplant (1963) was on par with this magnitude of scientific achivement,3,500 life saving heart transplants are done all over the world a year.
Calling this brilliant, ambitious life saving surgeon "Frankenstein" feels comfortable, it distances oneself from the perceived moral implications of such research.Realisticly, the moral implications of not pursuing the logical extensions of potential medicine( because the process is distasteful), far outweigh the collateral damage associated with consenting parties willing to try medically justified radical procedures that have the potential to enrich and extend lives.
