Re: “Cancer in Paradise

I am 60 yrs old and as a child remember my father talking about Avon lake. My parents decided to build their own home, so my mother set out to find the land. My dad tbought she was looking in Medina and Strongsville, but one night at dinner, she excitedly told him about a new development going up in Avon lake. My father said no to the the Avon lake development because he knew hazardous waste had been buried all over, in farmers fields. This happened in the fiftys and was a secret. The farmers were paid money and now this land was contaminated. I heard this story in the late sixtys. My mother stayed away from Avon lake after that.

Re: “Here is What "nuCLEus" Actually Means

This lot generates a little over 350k a year in taxes now...multiply by 30 years you have 10.5 million. Stark will give 18 mil upfront, then the state will also pitch in to a tune of 56 mil all said and done. Do the math. This doesn't mention the money generated from the businesses and tenants in the project. They are not "taking money" from the schools and it will not cost the tax payers a dime. CMSD does not have a money issue for students, it has a parenting issue...money doesn't solve that. Oh, by the way, here is the "telling" information that the reporter couldn't seem to find. http://www.clevelandmetroschools.org/nucleus

Re: “Cleveland Turns 221, And You Can Celebrate Today With Free Ice Cream

It is surprising that Frank Jackson didn't just happen to stumble upon the event.....and volunteered to hand out the free ice cream -- with a smile and small talk of a mayor seeking re-election.

Re: “NBA Tells Cleveland: If Q Construction Not Underway by September 15, No All-Star Game in 2020 or 2021

Lets be clear. The NBA did not assure Cleveland the award even if the "shake down" for the Q faade was completed. The projected financial benefit to the city is again another bogus number bantered about by the Greater Cleveland Partnership and Gilbert camp. This is the same group the projected revenue for the casinos and the republican convention, missing there marks.

If this is such a slam dunk deal, Dan Gilbert should foot the bill and if or when the so called revenue marks are hit the city and the county would return to him their respective payments over the same time lines in the current shake down agreement.

Re: “Best Cakes

Welp! After checking their website, uh, nevermind, White Flower. There's NO WAY I can justify spending $65 on a simple 8" cake. Bakeries in DC and L.A. don't even ask that price! I'll keep going to Michael Angelo's. #sorrynotsorry Not going to pay that in CLE!

Re: “Best Corned Beef/Deli

Simon's in Brecksville has the better corned beef. A friend told me she was going to pick up corned beef sandwiches and asked if I wanted one. I jumped at the chance! I thought she said she was going to Simon's , but she'd said Slyman's! I always take off about half the corned beef to make a sandwich the next day, so the one I ate was fresh with half the corned beef. I had to check the bread to see if had gotten soggy but, no, it was as dry as the corned beef. I had to drench the corned beef in mustard so I could eat it. I was REALLY disappointed. I'm glad I have since moved to North Royalton so it's easier to get to Simon's. But, to be fair, I'll try the Independence Slyman's and give them another chance. I'll dine in, and if the sandwich is as bad as the first one I had, I'll give it back, get a refund, and head to Simon's. One more chance, Slyman's. One more chance!

Re: “Best Cakes

What? No Michael Angelo's on Broadview Rd in Seven Hills? Or is that too far from Cleveland proper? They have the BEST cakes I've ever had (though not quite as good as my Guinness Stout chocolate cake with Guinness stout frosting. Everyone I know agrees on Michael's! Granted, I haven't tried White Flour...I'll give them a try. If they are as good as Michael's I'll be back here to give them props.

Re: “Best Butcher Shop

Had some AWESOME, very tender ribeye meatballs at an Italian restaurant in Providence, RI. I wanted to try and make some myself, but this shop said no when I called and asked, "If I come in and buy some ribeye steaks, can you guys grind 'em up for me?" After asking, the girl came back on the line and said "They can't."
Now I'm wondering if she thought I was going to come in right away. I'll stop by and ask in person next week when I'm in the area. I'll get some steak anyway, and maybe I'll try their ground beef, but I'm not sure why they wouldn't grind a steak, if they grind their own beef? Maybe they don't grind while they're open?

Re: “15 of the Best Burger Joints in Cleveland, East to West

I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt that this list was made before Clevelanders "discovered" Five Guys. From your list I'd have to pick Whitey's and B Spot (Strongsville is the better B Spot, IMO. The casino one is not good!) but Whitey's and B Spot have entirely different vibes. So, yeah, I'd rank them both number one. I'm gonna assume the other joints have decent burgers. I know BBB, Heck's and the Hot Dog Diner do, but I still think Five Guys is the go-to in their class of cazh fast food. Yeah, every Five Guys is pretty much the same (my first experience was years and years ago in the DC area when they first started expanding from Balto). But that sameness makes them appealing. You KNOW the service is way friendly, no matter how busy they are! The music selection is great! It's always sparkling clean and bright! And, the food? The food is GREAT for a burger and fries joint! Everything is freshly made to order, there are enough kinds of toppings to satisfy without being over the top. Seriously, some of the combinations at Hot Dog Diner make me cringe. I'm waiting for them to just name one The Garbageburger! Not because the stuff is garbage but because it's overloaded with way too much of the stuff, oozing all over the place. (When I get the kinda dog I grew up with in NE, mustard, relish and onion, I always have to scrape half the stuff off!) Do we really need THAT many options? And the kitschy names? BBB isn't as bad, but simpler is often better, so go with Five Guys. The only thing I wish they'd add to their toppings list is a fried egg. DAMN YOU B Spot! You have spoiled me forever with the Lola sans pickled onions!

Oh, and Swenson's Galley Boy burger is decent (I like the sauce) and they have GREAT O-rings! Try the Xanga (zhanga) for dessert. I get the hot fudge on the side. It's like a cheesecake and a cannoli had a love child. In Mexico. In fact, this is the first time I'd seen a Xanga in anything other than a Mexican restaurant. The upside to Swenson's, in addition to the food, is fast and cheery drive-in service! No ordering through a speaker (I'm talking to you, Sonic), and they have never gotten my order wrong (again, you Sonic). The downside is eating in your car! They do have a coupla picnic tables but since so many people keep their cars running while they eat, I'm not inclined to dine within breathing space.

A lot of cry babies on this page! Taller the better make Cleveland's skyline great. Just FYI he is not ripping the school system off. They get more money if the building gets built and the deal get approved then if nothing gets built at all. Amazing how dumb some people are!
