Re: “Dumb as Rocks: Q Renovation Will Do Precisely What Leaders Feared

"This is called capitalism and competition is good." Sure, except the part where the city paid millions toward the renovation. That's not capitalism, that's a corporate handout. The point of the article isn't that the Cavs shouldn't be able to enter the marketplace and compete with pre-existing businesses. It's that the city squandered a significant sum of money under false pretenses. Did the city also fund the Harry Buffalo?

Re: “Dumb as Rocks: Q Renovation Will Do Precisely What Leaders Feared

LOL the city handed $70,000,000.00 over the Cavs, much of which the City had to borrow to pay, but it's not a corporate handout because Lebron4ever "can probably assume that Harry Buffalo did receive some type of handout in regards to some type of tax credit of some sort." CAPITALISM!

Get real, dude.

Re: “Dumb as Rocks: Q Renovation Will Do Precisely What Leaders Feared

Specifically, the strategy is known as "rent seeking:" appropriating public (tax) funds to promote private development...As was the case also with the Convention Center and Global Center For Whatever, this particular appropriation occurred not just without a vote by taxpayers, but despite their strong objections...There is PLENTY of evidence to indicate that such shenanigans are almost always net losers for local economies...except for the corporate oligarchs who benefit directly from the public subsidies...This is the OPPOSITE of economic development: using public funds to enrich private individuals...Everybody, especially the Cavs themselves, were aware they were lying to the public: this was yet another exercise in raw corporate power, facilitated by the goniffs at GCP...

Re: “Dumb as Rocks: Q Renovation Will Do Precisely What Leaders Feared

Since when is competition bad? So having a new space to compete with the Huntington convention center is bad? What if an event wants to come into Cleveland but the Huntington and other convention center are booked that weekend? Is it bad that there is another option now?

You talk about how its going to take business from local bars. Do you think people that are booking 100-1000 people parties are competing for the same thing? I work at a company with about 200 employees downtown, and I can promise you we would not book the Harry Buffalo for a variety of reasons, but lets just leave it with the main reason space. We are way too small to book the Huntington Convention center so the Cavs special spaces sound like a great idea. We had our company party at the Browns stadium last year, so this would be very similar.

Your argument literally makes zero sense. This is called capitalism and competition is good. The more options the better the end product ends up being for the consumer. This will make the Huntington Convention center get more competitive. This will make places like Harry Buffalo step up their game so more people go there. This ultimately makes everything cheaper for the end consumer. You act like a city of Cleveland's size should only have 2 event places....

Your an idiot. What a sad world you live in.

Re: “Dumb as Rocks: Q Renovation Will Do Precisely What Leaders Feared

It's too bad there is so much socialism in Cleveland - for those with the most money, of course.

The two original restaurants cost city and county taxpayers $7,526,027, That is $5.1 million for the Terrace Club in the baseball stadium and $1.8 million in the arena. Nothing too good for the richest among us.

Too bad Cleveland and Cuyahoga county are in such terrible shape. Oh well, the Browns will be visiting taxpayers for a new stadium in the near future. Take it to the bank.

Laura, did you read the initial NYT report prior to submitting this article? He asked, the women said ok. That's not permission? I can't deny that there was a power dynamic (although the allegations did occur prior to his breaking out as a comedian) or that the behavior was inappropriate, but you're LYING when you suggest that he did not have permission. Please please please be a better journalist, WE NEED YOU.

Re: “Dumb as Rocks: Q Renovation Will Do Precisely What Leaders Feared

Since when does capitalism mean a private business gets public funding to compete against a public entity? That is almost the opposite of what capitalism stands for. Capitalism is all about public businesses competing for profit....taking public money to compete against a public entity (which would take away more public money) isn't capitalism.

Re: “Ontario Street Cafe, One of the Last Remaining Dive Bars Downtown, Has Closed

Such a shame. The Ontario Street cafe was a gem and a remnant of times past. It was a cultural hodgepodge that brought unlikely foes together under great service, amazing sandwiches, and the best drink prices in all of downtown Cleveland. The Ontario street cafe was one of the first bars I frequented when I moved to Cleveland and has been part of many special moments throughout my life. No walkway will ever be able to replace the character and charm of this landmark establishment. I remember Nancy, Man-Man and so many other employees who added to the charm of this welcoming establishment. I miss you already.

Pull the funding. Team leaves. Your problem is bigger than the handout that was received. Team had the leverage. Team won. Dont know what there is to bitch about.

Re: “Channel 3 Gets New Logo, Rebrands as '3NEWS at wkyc studios'

Clearly, WKYC is tanking and it's numbers are falling. Desperation time at troubled and hurting Channel 3.

Smoke and mirrors, style instead of substance...
And if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it...or worse..."rebrand" it (ugh).

They're getting their asses kicked by Fox-8 and they're panicking, so they hire high-priced "consultants" who tell them what they think and believe viewers want...bells and whistles and fluff pieces about food and drink and whatever is "trending' (gag) instead of hard news coverage and features and investigative journalism...all of which their competitors are providing for people who want to know what the hell is happening in their neighborhoods and their city and their region, and who rely on TV news because they no longer bother with the remnants of what used to be cleveland's only remaininga "daily newspaper.".

And the consultants tell them to hire half-assed, lame comedians instead of reporters, because they actually believe that viewers hunger for "more solutions, more perspective, more hope and even more fun," (retch). And they've added "new hires" who are smart-assed, giggling clowns that are supposed to help us "embrace change and live better lives. (choke).

Yeah, right.

Most jarring of all, they gave designers and greaphics people free reign to re-style their logo and rename the place and come up with splashy new fonts that look like freeway signs, pool balls, and typewriter keys. And strange juxtapositions of colors...light turquoise and tangerine? What the flood? What outfit came up with this shit?

You' can paint a crumbling wall with "the comfort of the blue," and "the sizzle and pop of the 'orangey' color" all you like. But it will not change the fact that you've covered up a crumbling wall.

Re: “A Reborn Lit in Tremont Reflects a Changed Neighborhood

"Now, the building is home to another place to eat. When it comes to the pursuit of fun, dining out has eclipsed antiquated pastimes like art, theater, dance and music. And nowhere is that more apparent than in Tremont where, for better or for worse, gallery hops have given way to small-plate sorties, progressive dinners and Taco Tuesday. "

Good-bye to artists, actors, musicians, and hipsters.
Hello to yuppies, foodies, snobs, and gentrified elitists.

You could also sense this at the Taste of Tremont, where the food prices keep on rising every year.

Tremont used to be interesting and culturally-oriented.
Now it's just kids with fat wallets scarfing down designer food.

Re: “Early Feedback on Cleveland's New Micro-Mobility Rides

Oh goodie. Scooter riders don't feel safe in the street where they're supposed to ride, so they're driving on the sidewalks, where they're prohibited from doing so. Can't see this ending badly.

- A guy who was nearly mowed down last summer by a schmuck on a Bird, motoring down the sidewalk on 9th.

Re: “Frank Jackson Dons Authoritarian Garb to Deny Involvement in Grandson's Investigation

This reminds me of the latter days of the Mike White kleptocracy...The oligarchs have assured Hizzoner that he's above popular accountability as long as he plays ball with them...So he feels no need to explain himself to the public...and, of course, he's made the mistake many of our more insular "leaders" in the public and private sectors make: because the only read the PD, since it's the paper they can manipulate, they believe it's the only news source in town...Chris Quinn and his ilk should be ashamed for such egregious ass-kissing...but they abandoned shame lonnng ago...

Re: “Frank Jackson Dons Authoritarian Garb to Deny Involvement in Grandson's Investigation

Frank Jackson is so drunk with power....his incoherence becomes more pronounced by the day -- and it's apparently the reason why his handlers keep him away from having any contact with the public, unless it's an orchestrated and highly controlled show.

Re: “Cleveland Drivers are Among the Worst in the Country, New Report Reveals

What a load of HORSESHIT. Cleveland has its share of shitty drivers, but they're nothing like Chicago or New Jersey. At least in Cleveland they are courteous while doing their misdeeds.

But my main reason for calling bullshiit on this so-called study, is that Florida (JAX especially), is nowhere on the shit list.

Re: “Cleveland Hopkins Airport Second Worst in J.D. Power Customer Satisfaction Survey of Mid-Size Airports

And this is what we have to show for having one of the highest landing fees in the nation!!! Its apparent that the city needs to get out of the airport business, and let somebody actually competent run the place... And I dont mean cronies of Taxin Jackson either!!!

Its so nice that former airport director Ricky Smith tore down the large parking garage structure, and replaced it with a simple surface lot so your vehicle can be either left out in the hot sun, or cold, snow and ice, instead of being at least in a sheltered parking facility!!!
