Rod Paulette

Thu., Aug. 23

Ohio comedian Rod Paulette, who returns to his home state to regularly to perform at the Improv, has a deep voice that seems to carry through the room as he makes fun of racial issues. Like actor/rapper/singer Donald Glover, Paulette plays off the stereotype of being a black man who acts white, and he jokes about some of the struggles he's subsequently encountered. In one bit, he talks about how people on the West Coast always assume he grew up on a farm because he's from Ohio. "When's the last time you saw a black man on a farm without a chain on his foot keeping his ass there?" he asks. "If you ever see a black man on a farm, sneak up on him, tap him on the shoulder and let him know he's free." Paulette performs tonight at 7:30 at the Improv. Tickets are $17. (Niesel)

John Witherspoon

Fri., Aug. 24

If you're going to see comedian John Witherspoon tonight at the Improv, where he performs at 7:30 and 10, you'd better dress up — because "you got to coordinate," as he puts it. That catchphrase comes from one of the comedian's signature routines. Witherspoon has worked alongside famous comedians such as Ice Cube, Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy and Chris Tucker and starred as "Pops" on The Wayans Brothers. But he might be best known for voicing "Grandad" on the animated series The Boondocks. His standup is even similar to the Boondocks character he portrays; it features fast-paced jokes that keep coming at you. He has shows scheduled at the Improv through Sunday. Tickets are $22 to $25.
