MELLENCAMP tells the story of a complex artist who forged his own path – transforming from manager-named “Johnny Cougar” to self-possessed John Mellencamp, a music and visual artist, a champion of heartland values, and an advocate for American farmers. The exhibit is comprised mainly of artifacts from Mellencamp’s personal collection. Over 100 items are on display, including handwritten lyrics, personal photographs, art pieces, instruments and more.

1967, the year Rolling Stone magazine debuted, was a pivotal year in rock and roll. It saw major releases from The Beatles, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Pink Floyd, Cream, the Byrds, the Rolling Stones, the Who, the Velvet Underground, the Jimi Hendrix Experience and so many others. It was also famous for its “Summer of Love” in San Francisco, the same city where Rolling Stone began publication. Since then, Rolling Stone has been at the epicenter of popular culture and politics. Visitors can check out letters written to the magazine by celebrities, highlights of iconic cover images and more.

Summer of Love Turns 50

Through Feb. 11, 2018, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Fifty years ago, the epicenter of counterculture, the San Francisco neighborhood Haight-Ashbury, attracted young people by the thousands. Though an eclectic group, they often shared similar beliefs: experimentation, a rejection of consumerist values, peace, and a general opposition toward the Vietnam War. They also shared a passion for music. The Summer of Love Turns 50 exhibition will celebrate a time when musicians were looked to as a collective mouthpiece for a generation. Visitors can experience rarely seen artifacts including guitars and outfits, iconic posters, and artwork.
