Tears of Compassion in Classical Athens

An associate professor in Case's Department of Classics, professor Rachel Sternberg gives a "faculty work-in-progress" lecture today about "tears of compassion" in classical Athens. She'll argue that Plato observed that men began crying more because of the effects of poetry. Part of the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities lecture series, the talk takes place at 4:30 p.m. in Clark Hall Room 206. A reception that takes place at 4:15 p.m. precedes the event. Rock on TV: Norma Coates on Shindig and Hullabaloo

An associate professor who holds a joint appointment in the Don Wright Faculty of Music and the Faculty of Information and Media Studies at Western University in London, Ontario, Canada, Dr. Norma Coates focuses her research on two areas: popular music and identity. Currently completing a book about popular music on U.S. television before MTV, Coates speaks today at 7 p.m. at the Rock Hall. Her talk will center on two musical TV shows, Shindig and Hullabaloo, both of which are featured in the Rock Hall exhibit Stay Tuned: Rock on TV. Namdar’s award-winning novel The Ruined House was his artistic response to that journey. In this talk Ruby Namdar will discuss what it means today be an “Israeli author,” and how his work re-defines this term. This talk reflects on the lessons learned from Israel’s three wars with Hamas in 2008, 2012, and 2014, and the tensions that continue today. Dr. Yael Aronoff, Chair of Israel Studies and Associate Professor at Michigan State University, will examine the challenges that Israeli leadership faces in navigating the difficult dilemmas posed by conflict with non-state actors, who often dress as civilians and wage war among civilians.
