Movie: Batman Live in Concert

Fri., Aug. 23

Boingo Oingo's Danny Elfman scored the 1989 film Batman, and tonight at 8 at Severance Hall, the Cleveland Orchestra under the direction of conductor Ludwig Wicki will play the score live while the movie screens. Though it's not a great piece of cinema, the film helped usher in a new era of superhero films. The program repeats at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Severance. Consult the orchestra website for ticket prices. Florida Georgia Line/Dan + Shay/Morgan Wallen/Canaan Smith

Fri., Aug. 23, 7 p.m.
Blossom 1145 W. Steels Corners Rd., Cuyahoga Falls Akron/Summit County

Since breaking out in 2012 with the smash hit “Cruise,” the country act Florida Georgia Line has received all kinds of awards and previous releases, Here’s to the Good Times, Anything Goes and Dig Your Roots, have gone platinum. Released earlier this year, the duo's latest album, Can't Say I Ain't Country, includes the singles "Simple," "Talk You Out of It," "Colorado" and "Sittin' Pretty." The title track comes off as a response to critics who think the band mixes too much pop with its country, but when you write songs as sharp as Florida Georgia Line's, genre doesn't really matter. A Mad, Burning Desire

Fri., Aug. 23, 7-8:30 p.m.

“A Mad, Burning Desire” highlights the extraordinary accomplishments of the first English actresses who gained the legal right to take the public stage in the early 1660s. Many of these women capitalized on early modern society’s fascination with mental illness and catapulted themselves to fame by portraying characters who descended violently into lovesick madness on the Restoration stage. Paula Maust (harpsichord) and Malina Rauschenfels (soprano) will take audiences far beyond the music through engaging dialogues about the ways the perception of mental health issues in the early modern period is directly related to contemporary stigmas. 2163988556

The Modern Electric/Oregon Space Trail of Doom/The Dreemers

Fri., Aug. 23, 8:30 p.m.
Grog Shop 2785 Euclid Hts. Blvd., Cleveland East Side/University Circle/Little Italy

“Just like in the movies,” they say, and they’re spot-on. The Modern Electric has consistently kept crowds in Cleveland (and elsewhere) dazzled with their brand of “cinematic pop.” It’s all of a piece with these guys, and one often feels like a wonderstruck Ed Norton in a long-forgotten Wes Anderson flick when listening to their stuff. We check in with the band every now and then, and they lately released their album, Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, as a set of instrumental tunes. It’s an even more honed sense of cinematic enjoyment. (Eric Sandy) 216-321-5588
