78th Street Studios Third Friday Art Walk

Third Friday of every month

Time again for the Third Friday Art Walk at the cavernous 78th Street Studios. More than 50 studios and galleries will participate in this popular indoor art walk; be sure to check out spots like the Derek Hess Gallery, Tregoning & Company and Hilary Gent Studio for a chance to shop and interact with artists. Look for food trucks out front and live music on the first floor. Hours are 5 to 9 p.m. and admission is free. (Niesel)

Bad Reputation

It took years for Rock Hall Inductee Joan Jett, the former singer in the Runaways, to become a success. The documentary film Bad Reputation chronicles her rise to fame and includes footage from her punk rock days and from the time when she became a staple on MTV. It shows tonight at 7:30 at the Capitol Theatre. Tickets cost $9.75. (Niesel)

Halfway to CIFF 43

Thu., Sept. 27

To mark the halfway point to the 2019 iteration of the Cleveland International Film Festival, the Capitol Theatre will host a special screening of shorts at 9 tonight. Sacred Hair, a film about a chance meeting between a young ill boy and a Muslim woman in a Montreal park, will screen. It won the 2018 CIFF’s award for Best Live Action Short. Other winnners such as The Driver is Red, Spice Sisters, Zion, Bagheera and Stag will screen as well. The event will also include a sneak peak of one of the shorts that will show at the 2019 festival. Some of the films that will screen will qualify for consideration in the short film competition at the 2019 Academy Awards. Event organizers will also give away a CIFF all-access pass and vouchers. Matangi/Maya/M.I.A.

A splash at Sundance, the documentary film Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. chronicles the life and times of pop star M.I.A., a refugee immigrant who rose to fame after moving to London and learned to blend "Tamil politics, art school punk, hip-hop beats and the unwavering, ultra-confident voice of a burgeoning multicultural youth." It screens tonight at 7:30 at the Capitol Theatre. Tickets are $9.75. (Niesel)

Story Club is an open mic for true stories and was voted "best bar event" by Thrillist Cleveland. We're thrilled to start this second installment of our Cleveland show at Forest City Brewery! We also three open mic slots so you can share your true story! Open mic sign up starts at 7PM and open micers are given 8 minutes (1300 words) in which to tell their true tales. If more than 3 people sign up we'll draw names for the slots. Entrance is free, and the evening's suggested $10 donation supports local charities. $10
