Wildlife in Wax, a solo exhibition by Derek Brennan, opens Friday, July 7 through Sunday, July 23 at Loftworks Gallery. Derek Brennan, a Cleveland-based artist, has mastered the unique process of encaustic as a method to express the delicate balance between the abstract and the realistic. Encaustic is the use of hot wax and oil paints applied in layers to a piece of wood, thus creating a textured, vibrant piece of art. Opening Reception: Friday July 7, 2017 from 5pm-9pm Artist Talk & Demonstration: Saturday July 8 at 1pm Free

On the heels of Heights Arts' forward-looking Emergent 2017 exhibition is Encore: A Heights Arts Invitational, opening with a reception on June 9, 6-9 p.m. For this show, the Heights Arts gallery committee went back through its exhibition history and asked a small selection of Northeast Ohio artists whose work had made a particular impression to return and present their current body of artwork. Encore showcases Christi Birchfield, Grace Chin, Dexter Davis, Yumiko Goto, Doug Meyer, Mark Slankard, and Douglas Max Utter. Ranging from Jacob, the Jewish immigrant living in Cleveland to Michael, the African American youngster moving from the Deep South to Chicago, the exhibit helps kids connect the stories of these characters to their own experiences. Visitors can discover the interconnectedness of nature through displays built entirely with LEGO bricks at Cleveland Botanical Garden’s Nature Connects®: Art with LEGO® Bricks, which runs from May 27 through August 27. The exhibit features 13 sculptures built with nearly 500,000 LEGO bricks by New York City artist Sean Kenney. The sculptures depict a variety of scenes illustrating the interconnected relationships in the world around us, just as LEGO pieces interconnect. The Nature Connects displays will be located both inside the Cleveland Botanical Garden building and throughout the outdoor grounds. Free for members, $12 nonmember adults, $8 nonmember children
