Ladysmith Black Mambazo

Sun., Feb. 17

A few years ago, the locally based Elevation Group, producers of the LaureLive music festival at Laurel School's Butler Campus, conceived and created the Cathedral Concert series that takes place at Trinity Cathedral. Previous Cathedral Concerts have included acts such as Red Wanting Blue, Glen Hansard, the Blind Boys of Alabama and Joe Jackson. The Elevation Group relaunches the series tonight with a performance by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, one of the most successful singing groups from South Africa. The group has worked with artists such as Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton and many others. The concert begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $32.50.; find them at Ticketweb.com. (Niesel)

Hank Denson

Sun., Feb. 17

During a career that stretches back about a decade, comedian Hank Denson has opened for big-name comics such as Jamie Foxx, Cedric the Entertainer, Amy Schumer and Rodney Perry. Denson jokes mostly about everyday experiences. In one bit, he talks about how he was surprised to realize that kids can be allergic to peanut butter. "I sent a kid off to school with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich — state troopers brought him back acting like I'm a terrorist now." Denson, who had a role in Barbershop 3, performs tonight at 7 at Hilarities. Tickets start at $15. (Niesel)

Anderson East

Sun., Feb. 17, 8 p.m.

While singer-songwriter Anderson East didn't cut his latest album, Encore, live, the songs have a real immediacy to them. The swinging, horn-driven “Girlfriend,” a track with the late Avicii, suggests how open East, who sounds particularly souful on the song, is to collaboration. In addition to the alt-country trappings, the track features a great synth solo. For the live show, a backing band adds some serious punch to the tunes too. East comes from a country tradition, but he's recently embraced soul, blues and old school R&B. (Niesel) $22 ADV, $27 DOS

Survival Kit Sundays with Sister Smirk/Joey Nix/Brian Straw

Sun., Feb. 17, 8 p.m.

Last year, local singer-songwriter Brian Straw started hosting Survival Kit Sundays, a singer-songwriter night devoted to showcasing local talent. The name comes from the 78th Street Studio-based recording studio/art gallery that Straw operates. Sister Smirk, one of tonight's acts, plays accessible indie rock. Songs such as the Moldy Peaches-like "Animals" feature soft vocals and gentle guitar riffs in addition to the occasional blasts of white noise. (Niesel) $5
