Flanagan's Wake

Fri., Jan. 18

Flanagan's Wake transports the audience to an Irish wake where villagers tell tales and sing songs for their dearly departed Flanagan. Finding the humor in life and death, the wake acts as a dark backdrop to an otherwise hilarious show in which alcohol fuels the humorous reminiscing. Sort of like a tragic Tony 'n' Tina's Wedding, the interactive and improvised show engages the entire audience. Tonight's show starts at 8 and repeats tomorrow night at 8 at Kennedy's Theatre. Performances continue weekends through April 27. Tickets are $26. (Patrick Stoops)

Donna the Buffalo/Jen Maurer and Anthony Papaleo

Fri., Jan. 18, 8 p.m.

Bluegrass wasn't that popular when Donna the Buffalo started 30 years ago. Thanks to the popularity of bands like the Avett Brothers and Yonder Mountain String Band, it’s seen a resurgence in popularity. The band's latest album, Dance in the Street, emphasizes the jam band side of its sound. The title track features spoken word vocals and snappy percussion and the twangy "Motor" sounds like it could be a classic country tune. It might just be the band's most fully realized album. (Niesel) $22 ADV $28 DOS
