Under the guidance of well-seasoned chef Brett Montgomery, this 20-year-old restaurant in the downtown Renaissance Hotel seems reinvigorated. Much of that comes from Montgomery's decision to highlight local products on his Med-American menu, an urge that extends from precisely prepared dinner entries like Lake Erie walleye and Ohio City Pasta pierogi to the cheeses, sausages, and even the maple syrup on the groaning breakfast buffet.
Though this Polish deli and restaurant looks and feels like it has always been here, the Slavic Village shop opened in 2008. The front portion is devoted to the deli, with wooden shelving and coolers laden with smoked meats, pastries, and imported foodstuffs from Eastern Europe. A spare but elegant dining room in the rear of the shop dishes up hearty, homey comfort foods like pierogies, potato pancakes, stuffed cabbage, pork schnitzel, and cabbage and noodles. A buffet, during busy times, is a great bargain, offering an all-you-can-eat experience for $6.99.
Part family restaurant, part community meeting place, this locally owned-and-operated eatery has been dishing it out for nearly three decades, to the delight of a devoted clientele. The enormous menu rambles from Reubens and blintzes to quesadillas, pork chops, and chicken Marsala with varying degrees of success. But the hot pastrami? That has never, ever let us down.
Slyman's claims it's the home of Cleveland's biggest and best corned-beef sandwich, and so far no one has come forth to challenge them convincingly for the title. The three-inch-thick corned-beef sandwich weighs in at a walloping 12 ounces, and a Reuben tips the scales at almost one pound. Thanks to that lean, tender, thin-sliced meat, both sandwiches are champs.
    The Stone Oven
Besides providing breads for some of Cleveland’s top restaurants, The Stone Oven sells a variety of European artisanal loaves for at-home enjoyment. If the sight of all those golden-crusted beauties leaves you famished, treat yourself to a fat sandwich (on your choice of fresh-baked bread, of course), a colorful salad, homemade soup, or a giant piece of fragrant Sicilian-style veggie pizza. Counter service, with plenty of tables.
This good-looking cafe and bakery offers lots of noshing options, from coffee and a pastry to homemade soups, salads and creatively assembled sandwiches. Before you leave, be sure to stock up on the hearth-baked, artisanal breads.
