Update: Right on schedule, Rachel Kingsbury opens the second location of her popular Grocery concept today in Ohio City. The sunny spot is larger and more prominently located than the original on Lorain, but fans can count on the same great assortment of fresh produce, dry goods, prepared foods, salads, sandwiches, coffee and juices.

It’s been three years since Rachel Kingsbury opened The Grocery (3815 Lorain Ave., 216-303-9099), a green grocer/cafe dedicated to stocking and selling locally sourced products and prepared foods for those living on the western-edge of Ohio City. Come summer of 2018, she’ll bookend that neighborhood with a second shop on the eastern edge of the district.
Kingsbury will enjoy a prominent first-floor presence in the large Quarter development presently taking shape at the corner of W. 25th Street and Detroit Avenue. With nearly 200 market-rate units above her head, not to mention those already in the neighborhood and soon to join them, she plans to take full advantage of her new clientele.
“We are going to have similar products [to the original] but we will offer more of the things people need when you’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, I have nothing in my refrigerator and I want something that’s healthy,'” Kingsbury explains. “The more you give people the ability to get things easily, the more likely they are to add it into their schedule. Hopefully, people will treat us like their actual grocery store where they do their weekly shopping.”
At three times the size of the other shop, plus a much better equipped kitchen, the new Grocery will be able to stock more staples like yogurt, eggs, bread, fruit, greens and grains. Prepared foods, too, will be expanded to include a full deli counter where guests can order juices and smoothies, rice bowls, salads and sandwiches, and even grilled-to-order proteins like salmon and chicken to go on top.
“The grocery experience has definitely changed over the last 10 years into more of an experiential type of retail experience,” she adds. “People come in and want something right now.”
The grocery will have indoor and outdoor seating.
No changes are planned for the original shop, Kingsbury assures customers.
