Nick Holder

Friday, April 20, at Touch Supper Club.

Canadian DJ Nick Holder creates a hybrid of house music that blends deep new-jazz flavor and indulges in sophisticated Afro-Latin rhythms and soul tech. Holder has participated in the underground house scene since the early '90s, performing internationally in cities such as Glasgow and Toronto. His first single, the Latin house track "Da Sambafrique," placed Holder's music in DJ sets all over the world, giving the budding beatsmith cult status. With the full-length From Within, which spawned house staples "Trying to Find Myself" and "I Once Believed in U," Holder found his way into the record crates of DJ aficionados such as Deep Dish, Andrew Weatherall, and Carl Craig. Soon to follow was Underground Alternatives, an album that featured the Latin jazz sleeper "Summer Daze," which was received well by ravers everywhere except in the States. In the flesh, expect Holder to draw his set from music on dance labels such as DNH, Seasons, Diaspora, Giant Step, and Compost. Since Holder is returning from the Winter Music Conference in Miami, look for him not only to slide his own DNH imprint white labels onto his 1200s, but also to be spinning some crisp white labels fresh out of Miami Beach, where the heavyweights of the DJ music industry gather to debut the latest in discerning sounds.
