Gene White's Chocolate Chirp cookies have a not-so-secret ingredient: diced crickets. The nationally recognized "bug chef" will stop at BugFest Saturday with an assortment of insect-inspired delicacies, including cookies, spicy-bug salsa, and mealworm spice cake with bug-laced cream-cheese frosting.

Between mouthfuls of beetles and bees, kids can test their insect trivia in Bug Bingo. There's also the Bugmobile train and an insect hunt in the nearby woods. "[Bugs] are not just creepy, crawly, scary things," says Metroparks spokesman Bob Rotatori. "They have an important role to play." In this case, dinner. Wiggle Room

What's purple and sings insanely catchy songs with gooey lyrics? Not Barney -- it's Jeff, one-fourth of the Wiggles, the bright-shirt-wearing Australian import with the hit show on the Disney Channel. Jeff and fellow Wiggles Greg and Murray are touring the States with a song-and-dance show that comes to town this week. (The fourth Wiggle, Anthony, is recovering from a hernia, so Brett, co-host of the Wiggles spinoff Dorothy the Dinosaur, fills in.) They're at the CSU Convocation Center (2000 Prospect Avenue) at 1 and 5 p.m. Sunday and 3 and 7 p.m. Monday. Tickets range from $17 to $27, available by calling 216-241-5555. -- Diane Sofranec

Sand Blast
Arts Collinwood hosts a castle-building contest.

SUN 8/14

Prime lakefront property is going up in a hurry at Sunday's Sand Castle Contest at Villa Angela Beach. Builders between 2 and 6 years old will compete for a playhouse, while older kids vie for artwork portfolio cases and scholarships for classes at Arts Collinwood. Here's a tip: Castles will be judged on originality, neatness, and use of beach materials. "Include beach stones and driftwood, and wrap stuff in seawood for structural reinforcement," advises organizer Joan Deveney. "Just be imaginative and wild." The Sand Castle Contest is from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday; Villa Angela Beach is at the corner of East 174th Street and Lake Shore Boulevard. Admission is free.
