Janet Podojil is the GM of the Cleveland Comets women's baseball team. "General manager to most, group mommy to the players," she explains. Doubling as coach, Podojil is on the prowl for new players to add to her 11-member squad.
They play two games a month between June and September. If all goes well, they'll qualify again for the Roy Hobbs World Series, which was in Fort Myers, Florida, last year. Dave Covell, the Cuyahoga County Board of Health's deputy director of environmental health, doesn't just talk the talk when it comes to medical matters; he also walks the walk. Actually, he runs the run and is responsible for the initial Run for Your Life, a 5K run and one-mile walk that happens on Saturday. "We're doing this urban-sprawl thing, so your kid can't even walk or get exercise," says Covell. Children's games and fitness-focused activities take place all morning, and health pros will be on hand to offer blood pressure, cholesterol, and body-mass-index screenings. If spring training is any indication, the Indians will produce runs this season. And plenty of them. For a thrifty $35 million, the Tribe's acquired some heavy hitters. But its pitching prospects still leave a lot to be desired.
