More than $2000 worth of gear was stolen from the Beachland following a punk festival. Held the weekend of November 11, Horriblefest hosted 30 out-of-town and local bands in three venues around the city. Chicagoan Russ Murphy and Clevelander Ryan Dahl, two scenesters who don't regularly organize shows, set up the fest and booked two nights at the Beachland. The Saturday, November 12 show fell short of attendance expectations, and at night's end the club's office had a line of bands looking for their guaranteed fees.

"[The promoters] promised bands things and didn't come up with nearly enough ticket sales to cover that," says Beachland owner Mark Leddy. "And some of the bands were getting a little ugly about it. There was a good deal of confusion. We saw that [Dahl] was in a bad situation, so we gave him 95 percent of the gate receipts. A lot of out-of-town bands came in for this, and most of them were disappointed. And while that confusion was going on, someone saw where the mics were put away and helped themselves to all the microphones for the ballroom."

Leddy says the incident won't be the end of punk shows at the club, but adds that he plans to be more careful about which bands he books and which promoters he works with.

"It's not what I intended to happen," says Dahl. "Mark bent over backward to help me out, and I don't want to see the guy get hurt because of this. We made some mistakes this year, but hopefully they'll be fixed, and we'll be back next year."

Anyone who wishes to provide anonymous information or help return the gear can contact Dahl via [email protected] or the Beachland at 216-383-1124.

"We'd love to have the stuff back," says Leddy. "And if it comes back, we're not going to ask questions. I'd be happy to have the stuff back and be done with it."
