Doors open at 1 p.m., and the action begins immediately. Sort of. There’s a pre-show lunch and games for little ones. The band takes the stage an hour later. “This gets kids used to going to a concert,” says Gyorki. “When they get older, [standing around and waiting for the band] won’t seem so foreign to them.”
Today’s performance is the first in a series of child-friendly shows that double as promotion for Arts Collinwood’s various programs for kids. The afternoon concerts -- including one by grown-up faves Los Straitjackets later this month -- also encourage art education outside of the classroom. “Art is not about an elite, ivory-tower kind of thing,” says Gyorki. “Make it user-friendly and something that Mom, Dad, and Grandma can do with the kids. Once you do that, people won’t treat art like a different species. They’ll treat it as a necessary part of living well.”
