The Write Stuff

San Francisco-based comedian Bill Santiago had every intention of being a journalist. But he switched careers when he realized he was “a joke as a reporter.” Still, Santiago occasionally pens columns for the Los Angeles Times and Mother Jones, and much of his stand-up act revolves around politics and how it relates to his Puerto Rican heritage. “Everyone’s speaking Spanish now,” he quips. “George Bush is speaking Spanish -- a little better than he speaks English.” No surprise to hear Santiago say he’s waiting for the day when a minority takes over the White House. “We’ve had 43 white male presidents in a row,” he says. “That’s a hell of a lucky streak.”
