Before he started making lame Hollywood movies with Owen Wilson, Jackie Chan was a kick-ass kung-fu star back home in Hong Kong. Tonight, Lakewood Public Library screens Chan’s solo directorial debut, 1980’s
Shi Di Chu Ma. The movie -- better known in the U.S. as The Young Master -- revolves around a familiar tale of mistaken identity, a shamed kung-fu master, and a redemptive martial arts competition. There’s even a ne’er do well look-alike brother on the run from ruthless gangsters. But it’s Chan’s gravity-defying and jaw-dropping moves that make this one special. Watch out for the movie’s famous fan-fighting scene, which was filmed 329 times before a suitable take was nailed. And unlike Shanghai Knights, it’s pretty damn funny.
