Disorder in the Court

In Cleveland Public Theatre’s Sleep Deprivation Chamber, a young man is beaten by police and charged with assaulting an officer. It’s a true story penned by playwright Adrienne Kennedy and her son Adam, who just happens to be the play’s battered protagonist. The Obie-winning work chronicles Adrienne’s sleepless nights and her son’s journey through the maddeningly labyrinthine justice system.

The bigger picture, however, is an exploration of police brutality against an educated, middle-class black man. Panel discussions -- featuring local policemen, councilwomen, and judges -- follow each performance during the play’s two-week run.
