Adolph Gottlieb was one of the founders of abstract expressionism in this country. The Allen Memorial Art Museum’s Adolph Gottlieb: Early Prints features etchings and sketches the artist created in New York between 1933 and 1946. Like his later, more famous work -- see "The Rape of Persephone," a painting in the museum’s permanent collection -- the prints take a surrealistic trip through form and shape. You’re not quite sure what you’re seeing at first, but closer inspection reveals discernable images -- like a pair of grasping hands and an upside-down face.
