A Good Man to Find

The Hawk pours tasty gingerbread shots for the holidays.

Hawk bartender Troy Berry serves up a holiday specialty tonight, while patrons donate food and money to the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland. The 19-year-old drive drums up about $10,000 worth of non-perishables, toiletries, and cash each year. Berry does his part by mixing $3 Gingerbread Man shots, which include Irish cream, cinnamon, and butterscotch schnapps. “I was looking through my recipe book for something that tasted like a candy cane or a snow cone,” he says. “I found this one and was curious. It’s my way of saying Merry Christmas.”

Berry has reason to celebrate this year. The self-employed handyman abruptly quit his longtime supervisor job at a downtown law firm last year because of the long hours. Two months later, he landed his first-ever bartending gig. “I needed a change in life,” says Berry. “I took a huge pay cut, but money means nothing to me. I don’t regret it, because I’m smiling again.”
