Lost Tribesmen

@cal body 1 no indent:In his new book, former Plain Dealer sportswriter Russell Schneider tracks down some of the Tribe’s most luckless players. Whatever Happened to Super Joe?: Catching Up With 45 Good Old Guys From the Bad Old Days of the Cleveland Indians rounds up nearly four dozen pitchers, outfielders, and others from the mid-'50s through the mid-'90s -- a period in which the team rarely broke .500. “I just wanted the players to reflect on their careers and to consider what’s happening in the game today,” says Schneider. “They had no problem talking.”

@cal body 1:Schneider covered the Indians from 1964 to 1977. Since he’s still friendly with many of the players, he says he had relatively little trouble finding the erstwhile Tribesmen (many of whom are still in baseball in one capacity or another). Whatever Happened to Super Joe? looks at the post-Indians careers of guys like Brook Jacoby (a hitting coach for the Reds), Duane Kuiper (a Giants broadcaster), and, of course, Joe Charboneau (a minor-league hitting coach). “They all agree that today’s salaries have gotten out of hand,” says Schneider. “But they all said they’d do the same thing.”
