Pops Go the Divas

Three Broadway stars join an orchestra onstage.

The Cleveland Pops Orchestra will accompany Three Broadway Divas tonight in a medley of musical-theater classics from the Great White Way.

The trio of singers includes Jan Horvath, who starred in the original Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera and the touring cast of Evita. Her "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" is a highlight of tonight's concert. "It lends itself to addressing the audience, and they become part of the show," she says. "To do it with a full orchestra is amazing."

Horvath is joined onstage by Christiane Noll — who played Hope in the touring production of Urinetown — and Debbie Gravitte, who won a Best Actress Tony in 1989 for Jerome Robbins' Broadway. None of the three minds being called a diva. "We figured, if they have the Three Tenors, why not the Three Divas?" says Horvath. "It's a girl-power thing."

The gals' repertoire includes tunes from A Chorus Line ("At the Ballet"), Sweet Charity ("Big Spender"), and a medley of ABBA hits from Mamma Mia! "It's like a roller coaster ride until it's over," says Horvath. "We try to make the audience feel like they took a trip to New York without getting on the plane."
