A Different Beat

Before he formed Nyco, frontman Ted Atkatz was the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's principal percussionist. In his new role as singer, songwriter, and keyboardist, Atkatz lays down a heavy modern-rock groove on his band's debut album, Two. Little of his classical training comes through on these wall-rattling cuts, but there is a formalism to the structure of the songs that belies his background in more rigid settings. It serves Atkatz and his three bandmates well on Two, which blends Pearl Jam-like guitar riffs with the occasional glockenspiel solo.
