There are three types of people in this world: People who think Smiths references are a good thing, people who think Smiths references are a bad thing, and people who think Smiths references are such a good thing that they just can't help but use them as a name for their band. Texas indie rockers Girl in a Coma fit firmly into the third category, but have no real similarities to the mopey Mancs, beyond the fact that frontwoman Nina Diaz can croon her way to the moon and back. They actually sound kinda Sonic Youth-y, in high-tension-jam mode. The all-grrl trio's new disc, Both Before I'm Gone, was released on Joan Jett's Blackheart records. And if all those Gen-X references mean nothing to you, just go see the show anyway — and be ready to sweat.
