Mikey G's Top Weekend Picks

Everclear
This weekend's top arts and entertainment picks around town, from the guy who's paid to pick them: Friday: Mardi Gras is still a couple of weeks away. But that doesn't mean you have to wait till then to get hammered and swap peeks of your boobs for cheap plastic beads. You can do it at tonight's annual Mardi Gras Tune-Up at the Lava Lounge. We didn't understand David Lynch's Lost Highway when it was a movie. What makes Oberlin think we're gonna be able to figure it out now that it's a musical? And an avant-garde musical at that? Prepare to have your mind royally fucked. Saturday: Cleveland Public Theatre's Big [Box] series is one of the area's best opportunities to see locally created new works. This weekend's outing, Fault Lines, is all about movement. Fittingly, Double-Edge Dance brings the moves -- as well as videos, photos ... and moving sculptures. Prepare to have your mind royally fucked. Comedian Jim Gaffigan's made a career talking about Hot Pockets. And like a jazz standard, he keeps finding new ways to riff on the stuffed sandwiches. He has a pair of shows in Lakewood today. Chances are pretty good that Hot Pockets will take up about 85 percent of them. Sunday: It's been a good decade since Everclear was a modern-rock radio staple. But Art Alexakis has kept busy, leading some version of the band through his pop-angst songbook. Its latest album, Welcome to the Drama Club, features more of the same quick quips and riffs. Be sure to yell out for "Santa Monica" at their House of Blues show. Art likes that. --Michael Gallucci
