Following a Friday-night traffic accident, Cleveland’s new Matinee night club has closed indefinitely, a mere week after it opened. On Friday, around 11:30 p.m., Akron all-star cover band Black Sabath was between sets when a car careened off West 25th Street and crashed into the club, smashing its façade.
No one was hurt. “About 25 to 30 people [were] in the bar,” owner Mario Nemr told C-Notes. “Everyone was just hanging out and chilling. Luckily, no one was hurt. I am closed until we hear from the insurance and figure out a plan of action.”
It’s a loss. The club is located in the former site of 2527. Many of that bar’s upscale flourishes remain, but its framed pictures of Chet Baker have been replaced with posters of Joy Division and the Spudmonsters.
