Ron and Betty Manolio started decorating their lawn with eggshells back in 1957. Now it's become a tradition the people of Lyndhurst look forward to every year. Originally, the Manolios just put the hand-painted eggs on small wooden stakes in the shape of a cross. Over time, the display has evolved into something far more complex, requiring countless hours of work. The decorations have gotten national attention, and one couple even visited the house on their honeymoon. Christopher Noice's documentary, Eggshelland, traces the display's history and follows the Manolios as they put together an Easter display (despite the rain and snow, preparations commence some 100 days before Easter). A fascinating look at what's admittedly a strange spring ritual, the film shows at 7 p.m. Friday, April 17, and Saturday, April 18, at the Cedar Lee Theatre (2163 Lee Rd., 216.321.5411).
Extreme sports enthusiasts, rejoice! The wild and crazy 33rd annual Banff Mountain Film Festival makes its way into town this week, coming to the Allen Theatre (1407 Euclid Ave., 216.241.6000) for screenings at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 17, and Saturday, April 18. On Friday, the action-sports-oriented film fest will include Red Gold, a film about a mine that threatens the largest remaining sockeye salmon run; The Sharp End, a short about climbers who visit a variety of destinations in search of the perfect climb; and Under the Influence, a film about a group of daredevil skiers and snowboarders. Saturday highlights include the mountain-biking film Seasons; the BASE jumping film Journey to the Center; and If You're Not Falling, a movie about the exploits of notorious rock climber Sonnie Trotter. There's an opening night reception that starts at 6 p.m. on Friday, and Saturday's "High Altitude Party" starts at 6 p.m. with live music and prizes.
