7/17: Handsome Furs at the Grog Shop

There’s something about husband/wife and girlfriend/boyfriend music teams that resonates. Maybe it’s the unspoken understanding between lovers or the bond of familiarity. Or maybe it’s just a strange coincidence. However they pull it off, coupled-up music acts are thriving in the indie scene. Matt & Kim playfully stomp across the country, the married couple behind Mates of State take pop to a new level, and Handsome Furs’ Dan Boeckner and Alexei Perry tear up stages across the globe. Named after a short story Perry started writing back in 2006, Handsome Furs sound a little like Wolf Parade, Boeckner’s other band. While his distinctively imperfect voice still stretches over distorted guitars, Perry’s electronic beats take the Montreal-based duo to a new level. Handsome Furs’ latest album, Face Control, is more upbeat and less heavy than 2007’s debut, Plague Park. Taking inspiration from recent tours around Eastern Europe, the new material is raw, catchy and sexy. They’ll wow you with the futuristic and trippy “Legal Tender” and “Talking Hotel Arbat Blues’” anthemic chants. The Cinnamon Band and Lakewood’s Saint Ohio open the show at 8 p.m. at the Grog Shop (2785 Euclid Heights Blvd., Cleveland Hts., 216.321.5588). Tickets: $10 advance, $12 day of show. — Danielle Sills
