9/8: Fight Amp at Now That's Class

If you’ve never heard of Fight Amp, go ahead and clear out a spot on your shelf for this Jersey band’s records next to the Melvins, Big Black and Helmet. This ragged quartet deal in the dark, sludgy and raw rock that ’90s bands perfected after listening to ’80s metal, punk and hard rock. And while Fight Amp share those aforementioned groups’ penchant for chaos and sound pollution, there’s rhythmic precision behind all the feedback, murky production and blood-vessel-popping shouts. Riffs are jagged, but they still manage to fit into their pre-appointed slots, while the tempo swings are gruelingly tight. Like some mammoth and noisy contraption that gets the job done despite oil-dripping pistons and screeching gears, Fight Amp always manage to floor listeners with their savage take on rock. Dark Overlords of the Universe, Pass Out Knives and Little Sister open at 9 p.m. at Now That’s Class (11213 Detroit Ave., 216.221.8576). Tickets: $5. — Matt Whelihan
