10/11: An American Salute at CIM

When wind director Gary Ciepluch and orchestra director Kathleen Horvath were programming their upcoming concert — which features the University Circle Wind Ensemble, Case Western Reserve University Symphonic Winds and the CWRU/University Circle Orchestra — most of the works ended up being by 20th century American composers. With a few exceptions, most of us have never heard of them. “If you were in my field, these are household names,” says Ciepluch. The concert includes a dozen pieces of music by 11 composers, including Shostakovich, Holst, Philip Sparke and Gregory Bonanno. Ciepluch is looking forward to the show, dubbed An American Salute, which draws from the Cleveland Institute of Music and CWRU music programs. “Most conductors in my field, when they program their concerts, they have be concerned about the ability of their players,” he says. “I don’t have that problem.” It starts at 3 p.m. at CIM’s Kulas Hall (11021 East Blvd., 216.791.5000). Admission is free. — Michael Gill
