Singer-Songwriter Patrick Sweany Celebrates the Release of His New Album With Two Local Shows

Massillon native Patrick Sweany used to regularly play Northeast Ohio’s indie rock clubs. Since moving out of town several years ago, he hasn’t been as much of a presence. But he still tours and has now announced two local shows to celebrate the release of his new album, Ancient Noise.

He performs at 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Music Box Supper Club and at 9 p.m. on Saturday at Musica in Akron.

Produced by Grammy-winning producer Matt Ross-Spang, Ancient Noise was recorded at the Sam Phillips Recording. Ross-Spang also recruited Al Green's longtime keyboard player Charles Hodges to play on the disc.

“Sam Phillips Recording is the best place on earth to record a rock 'n' roll album," says Sweany in a press release announcing the shows. "I live for going into the sessions with no pre-production rehearsals with the band; we just cut the album on the floor. When we met on the first day of recording, Charles Hodges led us through a prayer before we had even played a single note together. I'm not particularly religious, but I have to say that was quite the experience and really set the tone of the album. The music is refined, emotional, and I was taken out of my comfort zone many times, which can only result in the magic you're looking for when the tape is rolling."

With its sandpaper vocals and clanging percussion, the lurching "Up and Down" has a Tom Waits to feel to it, and the soulful "Get Along" features gospel-inspired vocals and a driving old school organ riff.

Tickets to the Music Box show are $12 in advance, $15 at the door, and tickets to the Musica show cost $12.
