There's a strong film component to the fourth annual Who's Your Momma? Earth Day festival, taking place in Kent this weekend. At 6 p.m. Thursday, April 22, Catherine Gund's What's on Your Plate?, a documentary about two multi-racial kids and the food they eat, screens at the Kent Free Library (312 W. Main St., 330.673.4414). Then, on Friday, April 23, at the Kent Stage (175 E. Main St., 330.677.5005, kentstage.org), Toronto-based documentary filmmaker James Buffin will be on hand to show H2Flow, Samoan Tsunami and other shorts at 4:30 p.m. Jean Andrews will answer questions after the screening of A Forest Returns and Soul of the Woods at 7 p.m. Waterlife, a locally produced film about the Great Lakes watershed, screens at 9:15 p.m. "I knew there was a Washington D.C. film festival, and I wanted to duplicate that for our area," says festival organizer Jeff Ingram, who says he tries to get films that are "new, current, and local." "We thought we'd do it in a festival style and block off the street and use the Kent Stage, which is a great place for showing films." Find more info at whosyourmomma.org.
Another Version of the Truth: The Gift, an independently produced Nine Inch Nails concert film that pieces together fan footage from more than 200 shows on NIN's 2008 tour, has yet to receive wide distribution. But local artist Billy Ludwig is bringing the film to Massillon for its only Ohio screening. "It's kind of scary how well made it is, with all the different camera angles and everything," says Ludwig. "It's impressive, considering the YouTube videos that are out there. For not being some major production, it's pretty impressive." The evening will begin with an art show by the Massillon Artists Brigade; the film will screen at 9 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at the Lions Lincoln Theater (156 Lincoln Way E.). It's free.
Precinct 13 Entertainment, the production company based in Crestline that produced the local horror flick The Dead Matter, had a hand in the 2009 Fox/MGM thriller Deadly Impact, which arrived on DVD this week. Starring Sean Patrick Flanery as a cop who sets out to take revenge on the man responsible for his wife's gruesome death, Deadly Impact was directed by Ohio native Robert Kurtzman and edited by Medina native Andrew Sagar.
